Paid sick leave

Paid time off for illness or care that you earn as you work. No federal law requires it; many states do, often 1 hour per 30 worked.

No federal law requires private employers to give paid sick leave, but many states do. A common accrual rate is 1 hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, as in California, New York and Arizona. Others accrue more slowly, like Washington and Illinois at 1 hour per 40.

States also set caps on how much you can earn or use in a year, and some depend on employer size. Some cities, including Seattle, Minneapolis and Philadelphia, have their own sick leave laws.

Your stub may show a sick leave balance. If it does not, ask payroll how much you have and what rate it pays. The state pages list the rule where you work.
