Gross pay

Your total earnings for the pay period before any taxes or deductions are taken out.

Gross pay is the top-line total on your stub. For hourly workers it is hours times rate, plus overtime, plus anything else paid, like bonuses or break premiums.

Restaurant stubs often include tips in gross pay. Card tips paid through payroll are real money on the check. Cash tips you reported may also be added to gross so they can be taxed, then subtracted again lower down because you already took the cash home.

A quick check: multiply your hours by your rate and add the other lines yourself. If your number is higher than the stub's gross, ask why. See how to read a restaurant pay stub and net pay.
